On the side of your Mac with the ports, there should be a small circular button. Press it, and some lights should flash next to it. Take note of the pattern that they flash in, then compare them to the ones here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3205 (assuming that your MBP is 2008 or later).

If a SMC reset does not restore life to the MBP, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a free evaluation.

I word for word have the same problem going on right this very moment. The people that tried to help above, didn't help at all. I was. Wondering if you found the solution or if this problem fixed itself perhaps? This ruined my entire night. Currently my phone's charger is broke also.

Are you kidding me?!  This word for word just happened to me too.  I went to plug my iPhone 5S into my late 2011 MacBook Pro anf it just shut off and now it won't turn on, the battery lights won't light up, and neither will the charger light.  It shows no life at all.  What did all of you do when this happened?

    I actually just fixed it.  Here is what to do;

    1. Unplug everything from your computer.

    2. Take off the bottom of your MacBook / Pro / Air.  (There are usually 3 screws that are longer than the rest near the vent, remember where they go.)

    3. Carefully unplug the battery from the logic board.

    4. Wait 10 seconds.

    5. Plug the battery back into the logic board.

    6. Put the bottom cover back on.

    7. Reboot the computer holding the "Option" key.

It's not exactly what I did but it should work.  If it doesn't work, what I really did was unplug the battery and then plugged my charger into the computer, the fans started spinning and then it shut off again.  Then I plugged the battery back in, put the bottom on (with no screws), and tried booting up again.  The Apple chime played and then the computer shut off.  So I tried booting again holding the "Option" key and it booted up like normal.  I then restarted my computer to make sure it is back to normal and it is.

Wow what a relief.  I was really scared there for a minute.

*And for everyones information I was using a Belkin USB cable but it had never done that before.

My problem with my MAC about randomly shutting off is FIXED! following Solo Keita's suggestions.

KUDOS to you for sharing your knowledge.  It's GREAT

    Oppsss...  For additional details:

    A.  I simultaneously  hold the OPTION button along the power button for 30 seconds while rebooting, then release after that. (As my MAC reboot, at some point, it will display 1) hard drive or 2) network.

    B. You have the option to select the 1) hard drive or 2) the network. (if you have hard drive select hard drive, if you don't, select the network).

    That's it...

Seems my battery life is longer now as well.  This is my thinking here:

There were sites that we had visited before and storing something into the random access memory (RAM) of our computers.  Unplugging the battery, erased all those floating memories in the RAM.

The reason I said that, my MAC doesn't have the memories anymore where I'd been before after reboot.

The above is my experience following Solo Keita's suggestions and my thoughts of the matter.

I read somewhere which says to wait for 30 - 40 hours and then everything will come back to normal. So lets see it worked; otherwise I will open the backside of my MBP as suggested by Solo Keita:

What OSs were you all running when this happened?

The procedure that Solo Keita suggests is basically a "hard restart" or the way that the SMC was reset in a MB or MBP w/ a battery you could remove.

There have been startup issues with Yosemite.

    Hey babyluna,

Please start a new post so it will get the attention it deserves.

In general you could check with iFixIt:

    https://www.ifixit.com/Device/Mac

but we'd need to know the model, year and size.
