Is it possible to test cooling fan on a MacBook Pro?

The top of the keyboard portion of my MacBookPro gets very hot. I cannot hear the fan working. Is it possible to test it?

You can run an Apple hardware test:

You can also install istat pro or istat menus which will report the fan speeds.
