iMessage size?

So got a question about the size of iMessages...I'm not in a bind for real estate, but I do watch my storage and trim where available. I was looking in setting>general>usage, and under the storage it shows my iMessage at 1.8GB! (Saved). I deleted my messages down to almost nothing ensuring I had no photons or large times in any messages and the size didn't change. What's up with that? Is this just the size of the app?

At the same time, my iPad only shows 6.4MB (saved) and I probably have more messages going on on my iPad right now than I do the phone.

Is there anything that can be done to reduce that file size on the phone! What's making it so large? Thanks for the help.

OK, so after a bit more digging it seems this large file size may be my own doing. I have a message chain with one person that's extremely long; I loaded message traffic all the way back to Jan '13 before I stopped. So now I'm guessing the file size is legit because there's a ton of pics and everything else in this chain.

However, I need to keep this message chain for historical value. Any way to save this message chain for future reference but get it off my phone for now so it's not taking up all that space?
