Alesis DM Lite USB-MIDI disconnecintg

Recently picked up an Alesis DM Lite kit (new 2013 model electronic drum kit from Alesis with USB-MIDI out). I plugged the module into my Mac Book Pro using a USB cable I typically use for my Korg controller (I know the cable is good).

Here is the problem behavior (this is consistently happening)

I lunched Garage Band X, create a new empty project and add a new software instrument. I assign a drum kit to the software instrument and hit the pads (I hear nothing). I go into Preferences for GarageBand and select Audio settings and invoke the "Reset MIDI drivers" option. Once this process clears I am able to tap on the pads of my kit and hear the expected sounds triggering properly for each pad. The problem is this only last for a short while (usually less than a minute) then the sound stops and I have to go back into settins and invoke "Reset MIDI drivers" once again.

I would like to add that this problem is unique to OS Mavericks and GarageBand X/Logic Pro X. I plugged the kit/module into an older Mac Book I have that's still running Mountain Lion and previous version of GarageBand software it works just fine. All pads are triggers appropriate sounds, very low latency (undetectable lagtency as it should be). So this is a Mavericks/GarageBand X/Logic Pro X problem.

Over in the Alesis forums users of other drum modules from this popular vendor equipted with USB-MIDI are having similar issues (frequent MIDI disconnect or no connection at all even though Mavericks reports seeing 1 MIDI device) . The standard for USB-MIDI has not changed, why Apple?

Hi,

I had a similar Issue a couple of Days ago. It seems this belongs to the USB3 Ports of the Macbook. If you have a USB 2 Hub, try to plug it between you Macbook and your Midii Device. If it still happens then you need a Hub with a separate Power supply.

It seems that a lot of Midi Devices still use USB 2.0 and there are in some cases incompatibilities with USB 3.0 to 2.0 compatibility mode.
