I have previously used my optical out fine. Recently I have tried using it to no luck. There is light shining through my optical cable. The mac automatically sets the output to optical. But no luck with my devices. (Surround sound a DAC) Anybody know anything I can try? Can this be a hardware issue if its still emmiting light and registering it automatically?

A red light in the audio output port signifies that the internal switch is stuck. Insert the earphone jack a few times, blow in it real hard or use a tooth pick and jiggle it inside to trip the switch.

Thanks for the resopnse. I am aware of this common fault. I'll explain again. My jack works normally. The problem is that I can't get sound through my TOSlink devices. I plug my optical cable into the jack. Red light is emitted from my port through the cable as intended. My sound swiched automatically to optical out, but I am not getting any sound through my devices. As I have done in the past?
Earphones still work. Will give it a shot. Thanks
