I need to upgrade my macbookpro from 10.5.8 where do I go?

I have not been diligent with upgrading my MacBookPro. I recently upgraded my iPad and now cannot sync it from my MacBookPro. Can someone help me with this dilemma, please?

Click here, buy and install the DVD, and run the Software Update pane of System Preferences twice.
