HDD and SSD not working internally in MBP mid 2009 but working externally.

Initially my MBP mid 2009 crashed, when I re-booted it I got a folder with a question mark and it wouldn't start.

After trying a few things I figured the HDD was broken. So I got a SSD Samsung 840 EVO 250Gb which I thought would give it some extra speed. But it failed to restore and format the drive when connected internally to the SATA cable. I was able to restore it from time machine when placed in an external USB caddy. It will actually work when booted from this caddy. But once I shift it inside it won't start at all. After doing some research I figured it would be some sort of compatibility issue so I went out and bought a HDD 250Gb 7200RPM by Toshiba which again failed to work inside but will work externally. Does anyone know what is wrong? SATA cable would be my next guess but maybe someone knows better. Oh and the original HDD can also be used externally so it wasn't broken.

Thanks in advance
