I removed a memory stick from the computer without sending it to the trash and now the icon has disappeared. What should I do?
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)
Does it show in Disk Utility?

Disk Utility. (Disc = CD or DVD)
Look in your Applications > Utilities folder

Ah! I've done that and there's an icon with a stethoscope on it!
Should I remove the Memory stick?
Try restarting the computer.
Try the drive in another computer. It may be coincidental but the drive may have failed.

Edit: You posted while I was typing this response.
Can you repair the drive (not permissions, the other thing)? If you can, do so, then eject the drive properly.
Restarting the computer solved the problem!! (Unnecessary panic!) Thanks for your help!
I removed my memory stick without sending it into trash first. (The computer shut down because it needed to be recharged.) When I turned the computed back on and re-inserted the memory stick, I found that the icon had disappeared.
