updating drivers for ATI Radeon HD 4870?

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro 2 x 2.8ghz Xeon. It's got a ATI Radeon HD 4870 1024MB, a 256SSD (system) 3TB 3 Stripe RAID (work), and 14GB of RAM. I've been trouble shooting an error in After Effects and one thing to look into is if my drivers are up to date. I'm only finding info on updating riers for linux and windows. How do I do this on a mac?

I have an early-2008 Mac Pro. I recently purchased (it's on the way) an ATI Radeon HD 4870 card with a mini display port (and DVI-D).

I purchased the card (used) as an Apple upgrade kit part # MB999ZM/A in the hope that it would support 10-bit color to my new 10-bit color capable NEC PA 302W monitor.

Do you think the HD 4870 will support 10-bit color to my NEC monitor through the mini display port? Your information about the drivers being automatically provided and therefore updated ( I'm running El Capitan) gives me hope.

I'd appreciate any information you can give me. Thanks very much, Jack

JH191:

I have the HD 4870 in my system. It worked well with 10.11.1 but not 10.11.2 for some reason.

I was unable to get to the login screen at all even with safe mode boot up.

At that time I was using multiple monitors hooked to the HD 4870 and another hooked to an HD 2600.

I read some reviews and it seems El Capitan generally has problems with multiple monitors.

From my personal experience, El Capitan has changed things on the graphics card driver front.

While it used to be generally true Apple provided the graphics drivers.

I don't know if Apple is going to support the older graphics cards anymore.

I am probably going to switch to two NVIDIA GT120s that I have from another Mac Pro.

NVIDIA is at least pushing out new graphics drivers for the GT120 and 10.11.2.

Good luck.

Thanks PJ'sPal,

That's interesting about the HD 4870 and 10.11.2. Sorry you've had the problem. I'm only running one monitor in 10.11.1 , and am concerned with enabling 10-bit color depth. I'm not sure if the HD 4870 supports it, and even if so, I don't think El Capitan provides drivers for it. Still researching though. Thanks again, Jack
