After updating to Mavericks you need to upgrade iPhoto to v9.5.1 from the App Store.  If your current iPhoto application is v 9.0 or newer the upgrade to 9.5.1 will be free at the App Store. However if you have iPhoto 8.1.2 or earlier you'll have to purchase 9.5.1.

Ahh, I see my current version is 8.1.2.  So I need  to update.  However, I am stumped again.  With iphoto open I checked for updates and it sent me to a page no longer available.  So I tried going to the app store and typed in iphoto update 9.5.1 to no avail.  Thirdly, I checked generally for any updates needed, nothing for iphoto came up.  Any tips on succedding with an update?

Yes - you do not need an update - you need an upgrade which requires a purchase - go to the App store and purchase iPhoto 9.5.x, backup your iPhoto library and install the upgreade
