Can I get a Timpani sound in GB?

Hi Guys,

Just took delivery of a new 17" iMac. The PCs were too noisy (even with quiet fans) and the idea of a silent computer appealed. I'd heard a lot about Garageband and was really looking forward to using it but I'm really struggling. I know it's supposed to be intuitive and all that but compared to the windows applications I've used for the past 15 years it doesn't seem very suited to the midi and live recording that I'm doing and although the loops are great fun I simply don't need them for what I do 😟

Anyway, I persevere and I need tubular bells and timpani (both pretty standard sounds that I've used in windows) and I can't find either. I can find a few bells but can't get the sound I want and I can't find any timpani at all, in fact there doesn't appear to be an orchestral percussion section. Am I not looking in the right place

It does get better doesn't it 'cos the mac is so alien to me I'm thinking of sending it back?

Thanks

Rich

Zooman,

Your going to have to slowly add new loops and instruments, and synth to GB out of the box. Don't forget its just a small application within a set of digital hub applications. Once you start adding things in time you'll begin to feel the strength of the application. Still it may fall very short of what your used to doing and you may need something like Logic express or Logic.

Here are some postings of free and demo "stuff" you can find a use with GB.

Thanks for the prompt response guys. Not too happy about another financial outlay but I think I'm going to keep on with it this weekend before deciding if I can work with a Mac and if I can then it looks like the old credit card will get a another pasting.

I'm sure it's just getting used to a different way of working ............

Blimey WA that's a lot of links!

I think you're right about the limitations of GB compared to what I've been used to and that's the problem. I don't really want to lose that functionality but all I see at the moment is more expense for Jam Packs or Logic or buying Windows and running the stuff I'm familiar with. I could have bought another windows box for far less than the mac and I wouldn't have to buy a whole load of new applications. It just seems to me that buying a Mac and running windows is pretty dumb 'cos in the end it negates the whole reason for buying a mac.

Thanks for your reply.

Regards

Rich
