Yes you can.

Go to Finder > Preferences > Sidebar, then select which headings you would like in your favourites (desktop is in there!)

Of course you can put the Desktop in there, you can drag any folder you want into the sidebar for ease of access.


For that matter you can drag any app/folder or file to the Finder toolbar as well- your choice, in Mavericks just hold the option command key
