Question

do I give my 7 year old his own apple id for a new ipad mini or use mine

I just bought an ipad mini for my 7 year old. we have other ipad, computers, iphones etc under my apple Id. I don't want my son to access some of my information, however many of the games and apps I've purchased are for him on my devices so I wouldn't have to re purchase them if I use my id.

I guess I'm wondering how do I set his mini up and make it kid friendly? Is there an option to create a kids apple Id as it asks for what year you are born and he is too young

Its really up to you how you manage your kids content. Think about what you want him to access. Do you want him to access Messages? iCloud? Facetime? or only the iTunes and App Stores?

You can use your Apple ID for just the stores so he can access the purchased Apps for free but avoid setting up an Id for the other services if you don't want to. In the end its up to you whether you want to create an ID for him at this point. You certainly don't need to.

You can also use restrictions to setup some parental controls.

As to the age restrictions to create an apple id, you need to enter a valid date above 13 years of age to create one, but no one is stopping you from lying about his age. As long as you are sure about what you are doing and are prepared to handle the Apple Id access it should not matter what age you enter.

well i have gone to restrictions and edited a lot thank you i did not know that was possible however I have now shut off messages completely in is in faded colour so now I don't know how to access it have I turned off too much?

I'm guessing your restricted this: Settings->General->Restrictions->Allow Changes->Accounts. Allow Changes Again and you can go to Messages and sign out of the Apple ID there.

Remember the Restriction password you used otherwise you will have to restore the iPad to factory condition to get back into Restrictions.

ok so could you tell me how I set up his messaging so he does not use my phone number as his contact so we can text each other if I keep him under my apple id?

As I said don't Setup your Apple ID under Messages.

In Settings->Messages->Send and Receive. If its set up just tap it and then sign out form there.

Do the same for Facetime.
