Q: I recently upgraded to a Macbook Pro, migrated "all my stuff" from a Macbook, and now I cannot print to my Epson NX420

Epson recommends I go to the App Store to look for updates, which are not finding their way to me.

Turn on the printer - done
Connect the printer - done

Check for update - done - none

Install update via App Store/Software update - not available.

Looking here I see many people running into problems with the Epson brand.

Is this a market size related issue?  Should I buy a printer from someone who wants to treat all their customers well, or is there something else preventing us from being able to use the printers we bought from Epson?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

    Hello Fuzzy2k,

It sounds like you have migrated to a new computer and are unable to print from it. I would recommend the troubleshooting in this article to help resolve the printer issue, becuase cehcking for software updates is where I would have started too:
Troubleshooting printer issues in OS X

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3147

Follow these steps until the issue is addressed:

    1. Make sure that the printer is powered on, has ink / toner, and that there are no alerts on the printer’s control panel. Note: If you cannot clear an alert on the printer's control panel, stop here and check the printer's documentation or contact the manufacturer for support.
    2. Ensure the printer is properly connected to a USB port on the Mac or AirPort base station / Time Capsule. If the printer is a network-capable printer, make sure that it is properly connected to your home network.
    3. Use Software Update to find and install the latest available updates. If an update is installed, see if the issue persists.
    4. Open the Print & Scan pane or Print & Fax (Snow Leopard) pane in System Preferences.
    5. Delete the affected printer, then add the printer again.

If the issue persists, try these additional steps:

    1. Reset the printing system, then add the printer again.
    2. If the issue still persists, reset the printing system again.  Download and install your printer's drivers. Then, add the printer again.
    3. Contact the printer vendor or visit their website for further assistance.

    Additional Information

Note: If your printer is wireless-capable, you should first add the printer to your network. Use the printer's control panel, or temporarily connect the printer to your Mac via USB.  For more details, see this article.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

    All the very best,

    Sterling

    Sterling,

    Thank you for trying.

    1. The printer is fine.  Ink/toner are adequate, there are no issues of that sort. There is no driver installed.

    2. The printer is connected. The cable is working. There is no driver installed.

    3. Using the Software update finds no applicable updates, perhaps because There is no driver installed.

    4. There is no reason to Open the Print & Scan pane or Print & Fax (Snow Leopard) pane in System Preferences, since I did that before posting, yet to humor you, I am doing it again.  There is still no printer installed there.  Possible because There is no driver installed.

    5. I cannot delete something that is not there. There is no driver installed.

    Since the issue is persistent:

    1. I'd be glad to reset if there were instructions for my OS (Mavericks 10.9.1 as listed on the OP) The instructions go up to Mountain Lion.

    2. See immediately above. If I could download or install my printer's drivers, I wouldn't be posting here.  I've never been able to successfully add the printer yet. There is no driver installed.

    3. The printer vendor, in place of a driver, has a link to the Apple App Store, which is why I am getting snarky here instead of the Epson web site. When I followed their directions, I got info on updates I have recently installed, and then today I got an update to another unrelated piece of software.  I have not seen any recommendations for drivers for my printer.

I am surprised that using the migration assistant produced no trace of the curently selected default printer from the migration source in the migration taget. I'd have thought that would be a inimal requirement for a migration. How silly of me.

My work around currently is to print via a Windows machine.  Obviously, this is less than optimal.  I'd like to be able to print and scan from my snazzy new MBP on the Epson All-In-One printer(NX420).  I hoped I'd get some help here.  Is that unlikely?

I appreciate you taking the time to try and assist.  I hope this has clarified why I am so disappointed with the level of support, so far.

    Thank you for your time.
