iMovie Sony TRV310 import of a Video 8 tape

Trying to use iMovie 10.0.1 to import a movie from my handycam through the Firewire/DV port.

I can successfully import a digitally recorded tape, but an old tape (from 1990) that was recorded in Video 8, shows through into iMovie, and iMovie can control the start/stop rewinde/fwd etc.. but it won't record the video off of the camcorder.

Any ideas?

Did anyone figure out how to get around this issue?

Any alternatives than iMovie?
