They both cost over 500 dollars, so I would maybe get him the iPhone 4. But if it is between the 5s and 5c. Get the 5c. He will lock himself out of the 5s in no time with the touch id. And the 5c comes in cool colors.
you should wait until he's a little older like 13-14 so that way he can understand what he can and can not do
Be prepared to replace it. My 16-year-old nephew left his unlocked 64 GB iphone 5 unattended and unsecured in the locker room at school. He faced several months without a phone until my brother found a new-in-box 4 and gave it as a Christmas present.
Will the 10-year-old lose it? Maybe and maybe not, but be prepared.
By the way ... he received the replacement because he accepted the punishment "like a man" and has learned that losing property has consequences.
