Back to my mac using mobile hotspot data connection

Hey there

I've been trying to connecting to an old mac using Back to my mac and a third party SFTP client called 'Cyberduck'. For some reason I couldn't connect, I think the machine which is at home is powered down.

I was connecting over a mobile hotspot connection using my iPhone 5s. When I checked my data usage after attempting the connection to my old mac I found that this had used over 1GB of data, even though I never actually connected or transferred any files.

Is this sort of data usage typical of back to my mac and SFTP connections? At first I thought it was an issue with my mobile company incorrectly estimating the data I had used, surely trying to just initiate a connection wouldn't use that much data?

Any ideas?
