Q: backup help

I ran my first backup of my macbook pro in Oct 2013. I connected the backup drive today to run another backup and it appears to be doing another complete backup, not just data since last backup.  Why?  And, how can I make sure to only do new data backups from now on?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)
