Mail is not responding - it just freezes

i tried opening an old email i had with attachements to check the wordings - and my MAIL just keeps freezing up - even after force quiting when i open again it just goes back directly to what it was doing before -and freezes again

please help

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2010), Mac OS X (10.6.8)
