When you did the update did you go through Disk Utility and format the disk?

No it was just like a normal update?

OK, need more info. What version of the OS and what kind of update? Did you go from Lion to Mavericks, Mavericks 10.9 to 10.9.1, what?

Not quite sure, the computer is like 4 years old, so its not those big ones, its like a system update or something

i would guess that it is 10.3.1 or something?

There is no way to help you until you advise us of the following:

Need to know which OS is on the MBP.  Each OS has its own troubleshooting solutions.  If anyone here provides the wrong info, your system could be damaged which will cost $$$ to repair since you are out of warranty.

You should not be downloading anything unless you know if it's compatible and/or your OS needs it.  Reason why you need to keep abreast of which OS and version is installed.

If all your files are missing

You may have logged in as a different user, such as Guest. Open the Users & Groups pane in System Preferences. Your name should be at the top of the user list, under Current User. See also this support article.

If files are missing from one folder

Change the Finder view mode; for example, from icon view to list view, or vice versa.

I hope you're backing up all your data. If you aren't, you will eventually lose it for real, and no one will be able to help.

Thank you. This post just saved me too. I hadn't noticed that somehow I'd managed to accidentally change to guest user. Thought all had deleted (although I backup left, right & centre) so nice to not embarrass myself at Genius Bar now!
