4s. I text my husband at work, but he doesn't get any of them until he walks through the door at home. Then his phone starts with the notifications, one after another, of all the messages he's received all day. Is there a setting that causes this that we can change or fix?

Does he have cellular data disabled (settings->cellular)?
If you both are using iMessage between a pair of iPhones and he has cellular data off, then iMessage cannot send or receive until he hits a wifi node.
Both of us have iPhones. I don't always leave my cellular data on and he rarely turns his on.. so I guess we need to either both use it or turn it off, or leave the data on? iMessage is a pain in the butt!
iMessage requires a data connection. If you're not connected to WiFi and you have cellular data turned off, then you're not going to be able to send or receive iMessages.
Why do you turn the cellular data off? That almost completely defeats the purpose of having a smart phone.

Then go into settings -> messages -> send & receive then tap your AppleID and choose to sign out of your iMessage account. Then leave cellular data off and use plain old SMS text messaging instead. SMS text messages use your cellular voice channel so use no cellular data at all (of course they also cannot use wifi). MMS messages will require that cellular data be turned on though.
iMessages uses an internet connection - either wifi (when available) or cellular when wifi is not available. But when neither are available, iMessage can do nothing.
I leave my data off because we don't have a large amount per month to use. I turn it on when I need it, otherwise most of the time I am using Wifi.
Thanks everyone for the info, I had a suspicion it had to do with iMessage but this confirms.
Does he have cellular data turned on? WiFi access at work? Does he have an iPhone? Are you using an iPhone?
With cellular data turned off, if you are not connected to wi-fi, that would explain why you are not getting iMessages. They work on data only.
Turn on Send as SMS in Settings > Messages
