Q: piano roll midi channel

Hi all, cant work this out!

How do I set the midi channel for the notes I enter in manually in the piano roll using the pencil tool? I have a set up of say a drum kit with 9 different instruments, one on each midi channel and I want to input notes on channel 5. All I seem to be able to do is enter on channel 1 then adjust them in the Event List view.

Is there a way to set the midi channel of the pencil tool BEFORE I input notes? Surely there must be?
