Q: iMessenger offline

iMessage will no longer let me sign into my apple id on my MacBook Pro.  It continually tells me "An error occurred during activation. Try again."  I know I am entering in the correct apple id and password.  How do I resolve this?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

    Hi,

In Applications/Utilities open the keychain Access app.

Find the entry in the right hand pane for the IDS: yourAppleID-Auth token and delete it.

    Restart the Messages app.

    Hi,

I have two as I have tried out two Apple IDs

    Auth Token.png

The same applies to different IDs used with Yahoo and Jabber below the highlighted item.

    ids: message-protection-key

    ids: identity-rsa-public-key

    ids: identity-rsa-private-key

    ids: identity-rsa-dey-pair-signature-v1

but not an ids:(myappleid)- Auth Token...

Should I delete one of the ones above?

    Hi,

I would not delete the others.

When you said this worked before do you mean it was working in a version that was earlier than the OS X 10.8.2 update ?

I know that some people hold back on Upgrading until a specific app they want works in the latest version.

However at OS  X 10.8.2 Messages 7 was updated to version 7.0.1 and this then used the Serial Number of the Mac to create the Auth token.

If your Mac does not have a Serial Number than it will not work.

(also if the mother/logic board has been replaced and the the Serial Number not "flashed" to it then that will cause this as well).

Go to the Apple Icon Menu and use the "About this Mac" item

Click twice on the line that lists the Current OS level.

It will change to the Build number for the OS version then to the Serial Number.
