Q: Is there a way to connect to a network share without opening the folder in Finder?

To simplify things on the family iMac (OSX 10.9.1) I have six shared folders connect automatically at login. While it's hardly onerous to then shut the 6 open Finder windows, it'd be nice if they would just connect and show themselves on the desktop without opening.

Mini, Mac OS X (10.6.2), 3 MacBooks, 1 iMac, 1 ubuntu box on LAN
