SmartMail box Emails start reappearing ...

I have been getting to grips with Smart Mailboxes, when I used them to do some spingcleaning I decided to delete a load 'em masse'. I selected all the emaisl in a smart mail box and deleted them. It seemed to work only for them to all reappear a few seconds later.
