Q: iCloud storage message

I received the following:  You have now exceeded your iCloud storage.  I opened System Prefs on my iMac and clicked on iCloud.  It showed that I have only used about half of my allocated storage.  Any ideas?

You have now exceeded your iCloud storage, including an additional amount provided to allow you to continue receiving email. As a result, you will not be able to send or receive new email messages with your iCloud email address until you free up storage space or buy more storage.

To free up storage in your account:

Step 1:On your iOS device, go to Settings and tap iCloud.
    Step 2:Tap Storage & Backup.
Step 3:Tap Manage Storage and choose items you’d like to delete or stop backing up.
For more information on managing your iCloud storage, please read this article.

    To buy more storage:

Step 1:On your iOS device, go to Settings and tap iCloud.
    Step 2:Tap Storage & Backup.
    Step 3:Choose Buy More Storage.
You can also buy more iCloud storage from a Mac or PC.

If you see a discrepancy in your iCloud storage space between your Mac (in System Preferences>iCloud) and your iOS device (in Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup) then you'll have to contact Apple support for assistance (http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/contact/).  Unless your device is very new or you paid for extended AppleCare, their would normally be a charge for the call.  However, under the circumstances you should plead your case that the problem was created at Apple's end and you should not be charged for the call.
