I have tried Safe boot. One time it came up with terminal (still black with white print) but keyboard would not work nor mouse. Ideas?

Hold alt key at bootup, do you see any boot choices?
Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...
/sbin/fsck -fy
Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck...
TKU for answering! I do not have an 'alt' key... Before my G5, I had a Sun machine. Never had a Windoz machine. Is the alt key the Apple command key?
Sometimes it's called option key on a Mac, Apple or Command key, (CMD) is different key, no idea what it might be on a Sun KB. 🙂
OK TKU! I will try just pushing the 'option' key and let you know.
well 'option' did nothing - neither did safe boot. Other ideas? Seems it doesn't recognize my keyboard.

Hi Suzanna, there seems to be a bit of similarity with my G5 problems, except I had leopard. My keyboard has stopped working also. Have a read of my posts too, we may end up in a similar situation.

TKU Adam! Haven't had a chance yet to look at it. I put on new keyboard and mouse but did not help. I left it on and the fan started roaring.
I thought I would try another keyboard and mouse as I had another working one near, but no go. Left it on a bit and fans started roaring again so shut down.
The fans roaring are normal safety feature when no OS takes over control of the fans, that said no use leaving it like that, but not dangerous.
So, holding alt or option key at bootup shows no boot volumes?

Hi, yes upon pressing the power button, there is like a big hum (kind of sounds like the fans going briefly, but it probably isn't that).
Then I'd say you have a Ground Loop, possibly a bad Capacitor in the PSU.
