I belong to a email discussion group where I recieve several gourp emails per-day. Is there a way to direct these emails to a folder directly as they come in so as not to flood my regualar emal in box. And how do I set that up?

Add a New Rule in Mail>Preferences>Rules pointing to the new Mailbox...

Smart Mailboxes are just aliases or pointers to eMails in otther mailboxes that meet certain criteria.
