backup from itunes wont finish on my 5s

it gets to the "new iphone" "restore from icloud" "restore from itunes backup". when i click itunes back up.it turns of and says connected to itunes like it is suppose to.then it says connect to itunes even though its plugged in.what can i do to fix this.i have to get info off of the itunes back up and the icloud back up is not up to date.any steps i can get or material i can be pointed to help get this fixed.thank you
