iMac restarts while rendering

My 27inch iMac (December 2012) is always shutting down and then restarting when im rendering / exporting from Adobe Premiere Pro or After Effects (CS6).

Maybe someone has any idea what this could be caused by?

Thanks for any help!

Hi there schmidt_chris,

Diagnosing a recurring kernel panic can be difficult. If you would like to avoid this process, or do not know how to perform any of the following steps, consider bringing the Mac to a Genius at an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for assistance. Be sure to ask that, if the drive needs reformatting or replacing, they contact you about escalating your case to a special data recovery service. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only). You can find further troubleshooting steps in the article below.

There is a chance that some peripheral device plugged into the iMac may be in conflict with the computer, or some software may be part of the problem. Kernel panics can be hard to resolve, and most are not a casual affair. When you have several other items plugged into the computer this complicates resolving issues because they could be a partial cause. Also, RAM that has a defect could contribute to a kernel panic under a load.

Another issue with heat may cause an iMac or other computer to restart or shutdown with a load, and one item that has re-appeared, happens when or if someone has the original hard disk drive or SSD replaced and another put in that no longer is seen by the heat sensors. Some users who did that also got the fan speed software to correct an uncontrolled fan symptom when the above change in hardware caused the issue.

However the list can be a long one. Attempting to understand what the numbers mean in a kernel panic can take time, too. There is a pattern in troubleshooting similiar issues, and that narrows things down some.

Hopefully you can resolve the issue with relative simplicity.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂

That type of panic is usually caused by a hardware fault, but any or all of the following third-party system modifications may be contributing to the problem:

CUDA

Avast

Soundflower

Logitech Control Center

Sony driver

If the panic is recurrent, I suggest you check that all are up to date, and if they are, uninstall them, one at a time, according to the developers' instructions, to see whether you can determine which is at fault. A conflict between modifications may be involved. Reboot and test after each uninstallation.

Back up all data before making any changes.

"Avast" is perhaps the worst of the whole wretched lot of commercial "security" products for the Mac. It's worse than the imaginary "viruses" you were worried about when you installed it. Not only does it fail to protect you from any real danger, it throws false warnings, destabilizes and slows down your computer, and sometimes or always corrupts the network settings and the permissions of files in your home folder. Removing it may not repair all the damage, and neither will Disk Utility or even reinstalling OS X.

Remove "Avast" according to the developer's instructions.

If you tried to remove Avast by dragging an application to the Trash, you'll have to reinstall it and then follow the instructions linked above.
