I want to delete emails from my mac, and have it automatically sync with my iPhone so that when I delete emails from my mac it also permanently deletes them from my phone as well. At the moment I'm having to delete them seperately from both devices which is quite irritating.
My email account is with gmail.

Sounds like you have Gmail setup as a POP3 account, & that's the way POP3 accounts work...they do not keep mail in sync. You can setup Gmail as IMAP, & that will keep your mail in sync:

You need to access the account as an IMAP account with the email client on each device.
