Ipod wont connect to my itunes.. Please help!

I was given this ipod touch 4th generation. It has already been registered under another Itunes. Ive tried connecting it to my itunes so i can restore it i keep getting a message that says it cant identify the idevice It just keeps telling me to diconnect the ipod and try again ive done this numerous times and the same message keeps showing.
