I have a 2006 ipod not being recognized by the latest version of itunes. Any solutions?

I can see and listen to all of my music from the ipod on my stereo or thru headphones but for some reason, itunes doesn't see this device.

iPod classic, Windows 8, itunes 11.0.1.12
