Q: external hard drive on Airport extreme

I just installed a new Airport Extreme on my home network, First, I was very disapointed that this Airport does not replace my Netgear Wireless router for connecting my wired network of computers & printers. Second, It also does not work with my Sonos music system. So after reinstalling my Netgear Router that does give meFULL control of my Network & Device IP's, I simply plugged my new AirPort Extreme into my Dell Power Connect 16 Port switch and it actually plays nice with my network. Now I am trying to at least plug my USB extermal hard drive into the Airport Extreme to create a NAS device on my network and again I am disapointed that it does not show up anywhere???. If someone could tell me how they were able to get their USB hard drive to work on this divice I would greatly appreciate it. If not, at least I have a nice range extender for my system and the Streaming Video this provides is much better then my wireless N.

Since you have the AirPort Extreme base station connected to an Ethernet switch is this switch connected back to the Netgear router? If so, you should reconfigure both routers for roaming network. In a roaming network, the Extreme will broadcast a Wi-Fi network with the same Network Name (or SSID) as yoir Netgear ... effectively extending the Netgear's Wi-Fi range. Also, the Extreme would be on the same network segment as the Netgear and network clients connected to either router will be able to access network resources ... like the external USB hard drive attached to the Extreme.
