What is the exact error message on the iPhone with this SIM card?

    Hi Chris.

I start going through the activation process & choose language, country or region then select my wifi network then it sticks for ages saying "It may take a few minutes to activate your iPhone".

Eventually it says "Your iphone could not be activated because the activation server is temporarily unavailable. Try connecting your iPhone to itunes to activate it, or try again in a couple of minutes.

If this problem persists contact Apple Support..."

If I do this (whole process) when connected to iTunes via my pc it brings up the message " There is no sim card installed in the iPhone you are attempting to activate. Please disconnect and insert a sim card in the iPhone."

I thought it might have been the sim card so tried my sim card in another iPhone 4 (works fine) & tried the sim card out of the other iPhone 4 and got the same results as with my sim card.

    Thanks,

    Col.

Have you ever jailbroken the phone? Have you ever used that computer to jailbreak a phone? This is an error that comes up under those circumstances. Try this support document http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3424

No, the phone was purchased unlocked from an Apple store (in 2010) & has worked fine until recently.

It was originally activated ona different PC.

This is the first phone that has been connected to this one.

I'll have a look at the link you posted, thanks.

    Hi Chris.

Followed the link and did what it promted and tried to restore in recovery mode through iTunes.

It went through the process of restoring the data etc. then restarted at the start of the activation process and once again I got as far as entering the password for my wifi before getting the message on my PC "There is no sim card installed in the iPhone you are attempting to activate. Please disconnect and insert a sim card in the iPhone."

Thanks very much for trying to help.

It looks like I'll have to put it in the shop.

    All the best,

    Col.

This is the last one I can offer. This is a support document to troubleshoot No SIM issues. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4148 If this doesn't do it, I would either contact the carrier that provided the SIM, or Apple support. Good luck.
