If I don't update to Pages 5, how can I still use Pages 4.3?

If I don't update to Pages 5, how can I still use Pages 4.3 to open previously created documents, plus continue to create new ones in 4.3?

More info from MrPaulv...

Whenever I try to open existing documents now that were created in Pages 4.3, I get a message telling me I have to upgrade to 5.0 to open it. Pages 5.0 has a price, like $20. I've never before been in a situation where when a new version is released by a computer manufacturer, I suddenly have to buy an upgrade of theirs to continue using and updating 'prior work created under the previous app,' so expect there is a workaround procedure I need to find out about. Anyone able to help?

It sounds like you already have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.

Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.

Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.

You are alternately opening the wrong versions.

Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.

Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.

Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.

Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.

All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.

Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.

Note: Apple has removed over 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

Hello Peter, while I'm working on a deadline task, temporarly avoiding this issue, I appreciate your details reply and will try your advice soon. Earlier today I read some 'unhappy' comments re: pages 5, so will try to avoid it until the situation approves. So thanks for your prompt and informatibe response!

Based on your input, with a quick look around my Apps folder, I see I also have 2 Numbers and 2 Keynote apps, the old iworks apps and the new stuff. That explains other recent problems I've had with numbers (haven't been using keynote). The new Numbers is much harder for me to use, I don't like it at all. Now I'll have to figure out how to get some recent numbers stuff back into numbers 2.3 if that's possible. Not fun...

Thanks again!
