Trying to update my ipod touch. What am I doing wrong?

I have updated itunes to the current version but it still won't let me update my ipod touch. Itunes says I am running the latest version 4.1.0. But my ipod says I can't download apps unless I upgrade to iso6.0. What am I doing wrong? I've looked at the support and done everything it says to do. Itunes says it won't check for another update until 1/25/14.

Just what version of iTunes do you have on the computer? The current is 11.1.X. A Mac with OSX 10.4.11 can only get 9.X, with 10.5.8 only get 10.6.3, OSX 10,6,8 or later is required for 11.1

To update

The Settings>General>Software Update comes with iOS 5 and later.

Connect the iPod to your computer and update via iTunes as far as your iPod model allows
