A friend of mine shared his Apple account with several other people. They all installed whatsapp. Then he switched to iphone 5s (was on iphone 4s) and now when he goes into the store, there's no option to install whatsapp, just 'open'. But when he tries to choose this, nothing happens. He asked his friends to remove the app and still he can't install it.

'Open' indicates that the App Store app thinks that it's already installed on his phone. He's tried a soft-reset of his phone to see if the app shows on his phone's homescreens after the phone has restarted and whether he can open the app, or whether he gets the option to download it from the store ?

He's done the soft-reset ? Can he find the app via the phone's spotlight search field, or does it show on the multitasking bar, and if it does has he tried closing it from there ?

This seems to be a problem in the app store's registry of what he has installed. Can it be reset?
He could try logging out and back into his account on his phone and see if he can then install it, and/or can he try syncing it from his computer's iTunes ?
I'll ask, but I believe he has tried all of these. Isn't there a way to remove an app from the store's registry?
He could try backing up and restoring or resetting the phone back to factory defaults and resync his content to it
