Avoiding repeat names ?

Using "Pages" or "Numbers" to compile lists, preferrably in a spreadsheet :-

When adding a name to a column of names, does anyone know how the column can automatically be checked to alert if the name is already in the list ? In short, to avoid repeats or duplication. 😕
