iPhone 5 locked due to incorrect passcode entered on multiple attempts

My 4 year old got ahold of my son's iphone 5, and locked him out for 24,000,000 minutes by continiously entering in the wrong pass code. The laptop we used to sync it died last week. Following the instructions of power off, hold the home key and connect to the PC via cable is not putting it into a reset mode.

We know the passcode but cannot enter it due to it not giving us the opporutnity.

Can anyone help walk me through out to reset this to the factory settings? We know we'll lose everything on it, that's fine. We just want it reset so he can use it again.

Thanks in advance for your help.

It has nothing to do with the cord. You will need to enter a passcode on the phone if it has never been synced with the computer you are using. You then need to use the instructions near the bottom of http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1212 where it says "If you have never synced your device with iTunes...". If you follow these instructions exactly it will not ask your your phone's passcode. You will still need the password for the Apple ID that Find my iphone is registered to.

I don't know, i've followed these exact instructions 20 times, it always pops "cannot connectect Locked passcode",

  1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
  2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to shut down.
  3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
  4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
  5. iTunes will alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then restore the device

I am logged into my son's itunes account from my laptop.

Does your son have Find My iPhone enabled on the iPhone with his iCloud account settings?

If so, there are instructions included with the link provided for erasing the iPhone via Find My iPhone.

If not, there shouldn't be any reason why you can't place the iPhone into recovery mode following the instructions included with the link for doing so. This is how a thief was able to restore a stolen iPhone with iTunes on another computer that was passcode locked prior to Apple implementing the activation lock with Find My iPhone under iOS 7.

Well, on a whim, I changed to a differnent USB port - and it connected exactly has it should.

So - I guess someone should mark this for future reference. If you have problems getting itunes to recognize the phone, try another USB port. Weird, I'm on a laptop only 2 months old, and that port works fine for everything else.

And thank you both for trying to help. The advice was sound, it was just an odd problem/solution.
