What kind of printer to use with my ipad

Any AirPrint enabled printer will work.

I have a Brother printer that works great with my iPad.

Any printer that supports AirPrint

If your printer does not support AirPrint you'll have to install AirPrint enabling software on a computer on your network

And share your printer from this computer

There are free and paid versions out there

Or you can setup a raspberry pi as a AirPrint print server

The raspberry pi is a credit card sized low power consumption Linux computer

Any Printer that supports Airprint will work. Personally I think Brother printers are the best and they all support Airprint.
