Microsoft Office Black Bars Issue MB467LL/A

On my 2008 Macbook running the latest version of Mavericks, I'm having a really annoying quirk with Microsoft Office. When I take the app fullscreen (to it's own actual window, not just covering the desktop) it works fine. However, if I swipe back to the desktop to do something and then swipe back to Office, there's usually a black bar at the top and bottom of the page. It seems to leaving space for the options bar at the top of the page and the dock at the bottom, except neither of them show up (nor should they, since I'm in fullscreen mode). It appears that working in safari is the culprit that most consistently recreates this issue. Has anybody else had this issue, and if so were you able to resolve it?
