I've connected the cables and turned the tv to the correct input but nothing has happened. Do I need to change something in my settings. The TV is a Proscan if that helps.

Unfortunately that did not help. My TV still says no signal. I feel like the connection is not being recognized. Should I assume it is a problem with the cable?
Do you have a monitor around that has an HDMI port? That would prove the cable one way or the other.
I do not. I guess all I really want to know is if there are steps I need to take once the cable is connected to both the tv and macbook pro to get things going or should something happen automatically upon connection?
It should just connect. You're sure you've got the right input chosen on the TV, etc? You might want to try a different HDMI port on the TV just in case.
