iPod Nano 5th Gen "update server could not be contacted"

My friend gave me an iPod Nano 5th Gen and its completely dead and hasn't been used in a while.

I connected it and it first said it had error 2005 which i resolved by installing an older version of itunes although it also said that 'update server could not be contacted'. It didn't go away after i resolved Error 2005 and i've tried everything but it won't work.

Please Help!
