How can I recover my music - exclamation marks

All my music (except some more recent iTunes downloads) now has exclamation marks and double-clicking gets a cannot locate file response. The info function tells me the files are located in: files://localhost/Users/myusername/.Trash/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music/name of album. The files are not in Trash. Not sure when change occurred - I recently upgraded to Mavericks and I also recently emptied my trash but I'm fairly certain iTunes has been operating fine since both events.

Help please!

Exclamation points appear when iTunes is unable to locate the media file or when a purchased item hasn't downloaded. The following article addresses what to do if you expereince this:

Many thanks for responding, Delgadoh. Unfortunately this doesn't move me any further forward - I simply cannot locate the "lost" music any where on my mac.
