QuickTime Player X not utilising Retina Display pixels?

Does anyone know why QuickTime Player X doesn't utilise the full dimensions of a retina display MacBook Pro?

For example, the display dimensions on my 13" model are 2560x1600 pixels, yet I cannot display an HD video at 'actual size' (1920x1080) - there's simply not enough space for the app to do that!

Now, I understand many elements in a retina display are simply quadrupled in size so they don't appear tiny (text, chrome, UI elements etc).

However, it was my understanding that photos (say, in iPhoto) or indeed movies would be displayed at their full native resolution.

I'm very confused!
