Q: opening a .sites2 file without iWeb?

I'm running OSX 10.9 and I don't have an old iWeb version on here or an old iWeb '09/'11 disk to install (not even sure it would run).

I just realized in digging through my old files that I have an old website from a trip we took in '08 that I built with iWeb. It was a full chronicle of a month-long trip with all the details, stops, destinations... all the memories.

So, my question, any way I can open that .sites2 file and get at its content? I don't need the images, layout, design, I would just love the text from each of the blog entries that chronicled the trip.

thanks.

I don't think you'll be able to get much from the domain.sites file without using iWeb.

Unfortunately no, you cannot open a domain.sites file without iWeb, because it is an iWeb data file and not html, so you really do need iWeb to be able to open it.  If you had had the html files it would have been better because at least you could have opened these with an html editor, but without iWeb here you are in a bit of a fix, unless you have another Mac that does have iWeb on it and you can transfer the domain file?

Nothing that you can really do - however, if you really want to open the site it will mean going to Amazon and buying the boxed set of iLife 09 or 11, of which iWeb is a part of both and installing it on your machine.

You can open the Domain.sites2 package by Command (right) - clicking on it and selecting Show Package Contents from the contextual menu.  You'll find the photos and videos used in the website.  That's about all you'll find that is useful.

However, if your site is up online you can get the same photos by dragging the files from the site to the Desktop.  The text from each page can be copied and pasted into the replacement page if you plan to rebuild the site (with a newer application than iWeb).

Somewhat similar question.  I have a different laptop and did not install iWeb because I no longer had a need for it.  However I found a .sites2 file on an old usb drive and would like to take a look at the web site in iWeb.  I found an iLife 9.0 disk  and installed it.  I have OS 10.9 installed.  iWeb will open, but it will not show me the file.  I click on the file and it opens iWeb as if I was creating a new site. Any ideas?

Have you clicked on the domain.sites2 file itself to get iWeb to open it?  Double click it and iWeb should open it.

Have you transferred it to the Mac and placed it in the User Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites?  If not, then try doing this and then double clicking your domain file and seeing if iWeb will open it that way.

Theres a little app type script called "iWebDrop".  If you drag your .site file on to it... it will open it up for you into iWeb.  I use it because I have several websites, most of which has its on .site  file.  Usually iWeb only recognizes one by default.  But with this little script file, it recognizes which ever .site file is dropped on it,

Hope this helps.  Its just a 100k file.  Try this link for more info and to download....
