macbook pro want to reinstall os x

My daughter has a school issued Macbook pro (10 months old) and when she turned it on this morning, it asked what language she wished to use then wanted to reinstall mountain lion os x. Im hesitant to do this incase it deletes text books etc the school put on. The school will have back up but she is not back till next week. Any idea why this happened and whether I should reinstall os x? Will it wipe everything she had? Thanks.
