On my OSX 10.7.5 desktop with Pages 4.1 I can write a document and it will be opened fine by my 10.9 MacBook and Pages 5.0.1.
However, when I try to open a Pages document changed/created with Pages 5.0.1 on my MacBook and transfered to my desktop, it cannot be opened and 'The required index.xml file is missing.' is displayed.
What can I do? Is there any software update for my old Intel Desktop (update to 4.3 did not work)?
The older software will not open the newer format.
In Pages 5:
Menu > File > Export > Pages '09
You should be able to update Pages '09 to v4.3. How did you do it?

Ok, what a pitty. So I cannot use my Pages docs written on my Macbook also on the Desktop machine.
I tried anew to update Pages 4.1 to 4.3 - update worked, but launching Pages I get:

Sounds like you have moved some of your files from where they should be.
Leave them where the Installer puts them.

I did not move anything...!?
The installer updated all 3 iWork applications in the Applications/iWork '09 folder.
However, Pages 4.3 does not start up anymore but crashes.
The log is saying it is finding it in the wrong place.
Maybe you need to start from scratch:

I did a new install und update, but without success (Pages cannot be opened because of a problem.)...
A tought occured to me since I had that with Photoshop: does it matter if my harddisc is case-sensitive?

Now why would you do that? It is a possible cause, but I've never tested that.
The Mac has always been case insenstitive and I suppose programmers may expect that to be the default.
Regular UNIX installations are the only ones I know that opt for Case Sensitivity..
Just stick with Standard Journaling formatting.

Why not? I also write/type case sensitive.
Why should a computer not be able to distinguish, and why shouldn't this be standard?
Anyway, will use the 'export, iwork 09' as you described for now to have compatible files.

Because it adds to the complexity of file management.
Humans tend to equate the names of files no matter what case: birds = Birds = BIRDS.
Really it is a Mac tradition, like Big Endian vs Small Endian.
