My macbook pro is stating that the application memory is full. I have 16gb ram and 500gb disc space. I do not run that many progams.

Open Activity Monitor from the Applications>Utilities folder. Make sure all processes is selected and bring up the memory tab. Look to see what application is using all the memory. You may have an incompatible application installed that isn't using memory properly.
